C. E. "Earl" Hodgin, 61, died early Friday morning at Mercy hospital, Anamosa, following a brief illness. He has been owner and operator of the Hodgin Hardware store in Anamosa for the last six years.

C. E., son of Clarkson and Elizabeth Hodgin, was born Dec. 31, 1884, in Dwight, Kan. His parents died when he was a small boy. Earl attended rural school in Kansas, and came to Iowa in a covered wagon in 1900.

He graduated from the Friends boarding school, known as Scattergood Seminary, West Branch, Iowa, and Oleny boarding school in Barnesville, Ohio, after which he completed a course at the Cedar Rapids Business College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He began his business career as a banker at Thornsburg, Iowa, went to Kansas City, Kan. Earl was assistant office manager of National Oats Co. in Cedar Rapids for 17 years, later operating a general merchandise store with Barkley Heald at Whitteier for 17 years.

He married Rachel Heald, Whittier, in 1918. They purchased the hardware business in Anamosa in 1940.

He was a lifelong member of the Friends Society.

Funeral service was held Sunday afternoon at the Smykil Home for Funerals with Rev. Edgar E. Walker, Jr., of the Methodist church officiating. Burial was made at the Whittier cemetery. Pallbearers serving were Donald Bennett, Cedar Rapids; Donald Heald, Springville; Floyd Heald, Howard Johnston and Loras McNamara, Anamosa, and Loren Heald, Plainfield, Iowa.

Surviving Mr. Hodgin are his wife, Rachel; one sister, Sina Stanton, Washington, D.C., and a brother, Emlin Hodgin, Cedar Rapids.
