Onias O. Hurt, 55, Forest Chapel, resident of Jones county since 1913 and guard at the reformatory for the past 23 years, died Sunday morning at 1:45 a.m. at the University hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral service was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Smykil's home for funerals with Rev. H. N. Hulse, Morley, pastor of the Forest Chapel United Brethren church, officiating. Burial was made in Norwich cemetery, Martelle.

Casket bearers were Alva Barbara, Anamosa; Paul Corn, Cedar Rapids; Arnold Corn, Martelle; Harold Corn, Anamosa, George Hurt, Martelle, and Joe Hurt, Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Hurt was born Oct. 24, 1890 in Pike county, Ind. In 1913 he settled in the Martelle community where he farmed five years. Later he carried mail from Martelle for two years. He farmed one more year near Viola before coming to the reformatory where he worked until failing health forced him to his acreage four miles south of Anamosa four months ago.

He was married in 1912 in Petersburg, Ind., to Flora Arnold of near Petersburg. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias lodge and a director of the Fairview township No. 2 school for six years.

Surviving besides his wife are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Hurt, Martelle; a daughter, Mrs. Thelma Shifflett, Shelbyville, Ind.; two brothers, William, Petersburg, and Walter, Cedar Rapids; a half sister, Mrs. Joe McCafferty, Winslow, Ind., and five grandchildren.
