24 May 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Mr. and Mrs. William Steenhoek, living east of Anamosa, received word Sunday of the death of their son, Russell LaVerne Steenhoek, G.M. 3/C, 21, somewhere in the Pacific. Telegram stated that he was buried at sea with full military honors.

Steenhoek had a narrow escape last Oct. 24, when the ship on which he was aiding with landing operations at the island of Layte in the Philippines was near the exploding 'Princeton'. He was home on leave while the ship was repaired.

He graduated from the Anamosa high school in 1940 where he played football. He went into service in June, 1942, and received his boot training at Great Lakes, Ill.

Besides his parents, one brother, Richard, survives. Memorial service will be held at a later date.
