George F. Bye, 78, died at 1:50 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at his home in Anamosa following a lingering illness. Funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Loder funeral home and interment made in the Springville cemetery.

Rev. Edgar E. Walker, jr., of the Methodist church was the officiating minister. Pallbearers were Charles Niles, Robert M. Peet, Julius Westphal, Howard Chipman, Eugene Rees and Arthur Stanaway.

George, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Bye, was born Aug. 16, 1867, at Chester county, Penn. He came to Iowa in 1881, settling at Springville, Ia.

He continued a newspaper career with a job as "printer's devil" on the Springville New Era that began with selling daily papers on Philadelphia streets when he was 10 years old. He later worked as printer on various newspapers in Idaho and Montana.

Mr. Bye affiliated with the Anamosa Eureka in 1898, when the late Thomas Booth was manager. In 1911 he purchased the Eureka in partnership with Louis Gardner.

Mr. Gardner sold his interest to Clifford Niles and son in 1925, and Mr. Bye continued in partnership with the new owners until his health failed.

On May 3, 1899, he was married to Miss Ida May Gibson, who survives. Three children, Clifford G., St. John's, Mich.; Clarence R., who preceded his father in death, and Dorothy, Mrs. R. S. Springer, Worthington, Ohio, were born to the union.

Mr. Bye was a member of the Masonic lodge, A.F. and A.M., No. 46, and Mount Moriah chapter, Eastern Star, in Anamosa. Mrs. Bye operates the Bye Pottery Shop in Anamosa.
