19 July 1945 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service for Carl E. Barnes, 54, Anamosa rural mail carrier, who died Tuesday at the veterans hospital in Des Moines, is being held this Thursday afternoon at the Smykil chapel. Rev. A. V. McClure of the Adventist church, Cedar Rapids, is the officiating minister, and burial will be made at Riverside cemetery. He had been a patient at the hospital for five weeks.

Carl E. Barnes, son of Mr. and Mrs. James A. Barnes, was born at Anamosa Dec. 15, 1891, and spent his entire life in this community.

On Sept. 19, 1923, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Michels. He was a veteran of World War I.

Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Carlyn and Mildred; a son, Merlin Barnes, fireman (1/C), Great Lakes, Ill.; his parents, a brother, Harold, and a sister, Mildred, both of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral service for Carl E. Barnes, 53, who died Tuesday morning at the Veterans' hospital in Des Moines, was held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Smykil Funeral Chapel. Rev. A. V. McClure of the S.D.A. church, Cedar Rapids, delivered the sermon. Two selections were sung by Mrs. Stemple White and Mrs. W. H. Lyons, accompanied by Marjorie Monroe.

When only a child of ten years, Carl read the Great Controversy by Mrs. E. G. White, and ever since was a student of the Adventist faith.

Carl Barnes, second son of James A. and Ida Barnes, was born Dec. 15, 1891, at Anamosa and spent his entire life in this community, except for a brief period spent in Sioux City when a child.

For almost 29 years he served as a rural mail carrier out of Anamosa.

He was a member of the Rural Carriers' Assn., serving as secretary of the Jones County Assn. for 10 years. He also was a member of the American Legion, having served in the First World War.

Sept. 19, 1923, he entered into marriage with Miss Elizabeth Michels. To this union three children were born.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Carlyn and Mildred at home, and one son, Merlin, F/2/C, U.S.N., stationed at Great lakes, Ill., his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Barnes, his brother, Harold, Cedar Rapids, and one sister, Mildred, Cedar Rapids; also one nephew, Harold Barnes, jr., Cedar Rapids. Two brothers preceded him in death, Herbert and Claus Barnes.
