Lavern Nagel age 95, died Sunday, March 7, 2021 at the Monticello Nursing and Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 Saturday morning, March 13, 2021 at the St. John Lutheran Church, rural Monticello with interment in the Oakwood Cemetery. The seating capacity of the church is restricted to CDC social distancing standards. Pastor Caleb Schewe will officiate at the services. Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 Friday at St. John Lutheran Church. Masks must be worn and fitted properly over the nose and mouth at all times to enter the church. Social distancing standards need to be strictly observed.
Surviving is his wife, Dorothy of 70 + years, 3 children, Linda (Ron) Kahler, Steve (Julie Majerus) Nagel, Gary (Kathy) Nagel, all of Monticello, 5 grandchildren, Tara (Chad) Kahler, Nick (Mackenzie) Kahler, Jeff (Kylie) Nagel, Kendi (Mitch) Monk, Jaycie (Nathan) Nagel, 8 great-grandchildren, Gavin, Anicka, Beckett, Molli, Carver, Laekyn, Maeleigh and Jordan. He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 brothers, John and Ray and 2 sisters, Olive Jane Nagel and Olive Maxine Herndon.
Lavern Merle Nagel was born April 11, 1925 at Monticello, Iowa. He was the son of Eahart and Esther Ely, Nagel. Laverne graduated from the Monticello Community Schools in 1943. Laverne married Dorothy Jacobs October 21, 1950 at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. He started farming with his brother Ray when they bought a 150 acre farm for $7000.00 dollars. He also bought and finished cattle and hogs for many years. In 1975 Lavern and his son Gary, started N&N Trailers selling trailers made in Arkansas. In 1984 they began producing their own trailers. In addition he was a Westfield grain auger dealer over 40 years.
Lavern was active in the Jones County farming community; he was a 4H leader for the Richland Boys, served on the 4H Extension Council and was inducted into the 4H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair. He was inducted into the Jones County Cattleman Hall of Fame in 2008, and the Jones County Friend of the Fair in 1999. Lavern and Dorothy, for many years, hosted a Fourth of July BBQ gathering for family and friends at their farm. His warm and friendly personality will be missed by everyone that knew him.
