Mary Kent was born in Derbyshire, England June 16, 1827. At the age of four she came to America with her parents. The family made a home in Mercer county, Pennsylvania, where Miss Kent grew to womanhood. In 1848 she was united in marriage to Nathan Clark. To this union eleven children were born, six of whom are now living, five daughters and one son. Mr. and Mrs. Clark came to Jones county, Iowa in 1863, where they spent the rest of their married life, and a good portion of that time in Center Junction.
Mr. Clark was a blacksmith by trade, and in September, 1893 dropped dead in his shop at Center Junction while engaged in work, apparently in good health. Mrs. Clark spent several years more in her home in Center Junction, but the last few years of her life she lived with her children. After a painful illness that she bore with Christian fortitude, she passed away from this world at the home of her daughter, Ms. Wm Bentley, Westboro, Missouri January 4th, 1902. The body was brought to Center Junction where funeral services were held January 7, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. A.W. Smith. The body was placed in the Scotch Grove cemetery.
Mrs. Clark early in life united with the Presbyterian church. but on coming West she joined the Methodist Episcopalian church, continuing a member of that church the remainder of her life, a period of over thirty years. She was an exemplary Christian in her daily life, a faithful wife and mother, and dearly loved by her family. A good woman has gone to her reward.
