HALE--Mrs. Roy E. Ward, State Director of Social Service of Hawaii, former resident of Hale, Iowa, died Monday, Oct.8, at Queen's hospital, Honolulu, which she had entered a week earlier for surgery.
A Requiem service of Holy communion was conducted at Parke chapel St. Andrew's cathedral, Wednesday, Oct. 10, Cannon Lester Maitland officiated at the service.
Her body was sent to Hilo, for 30 years her home, for committal services at the Church of the Holy Apostle on Thursday, Nov. 11. Services were conducted by Rev. James Walker, retired arch deacon of Hawaii.
She was born at Hale, Iowa, and a graduate of the University of Iowa. She went to Hawaii in 1932 to work with the Social Service bureau and in 1937 began working for the Territorial Welfare agency as a child welfare worker, unit supervisor and county administrator in the Kona and Kohala districts of the Big Isle.
She was made Hawaii county administrator of Social services in 1953, a post she held until her appointment April 19, 1962, as Social services director.
Survivors include her husband, Roy E. Ward, a design engineer with Dole Corp.; a step-daughter, Mrs. Ralph Hrovatich, Lisbon, Ohio; and two grandchildren.
