OLIN--Raymond Walter Grassfield, 64, Olin, died Thursday, March 19, at John McDonald hospital, Monticello, following a lingering illness.

Family Prayer service was held at the Hayden Funeral home, Olin, Monday, March 23, at 1:30 p.m., followed by services at the Olin E.U.B. church at 2 p.m. Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor, conducted the service. Burial was in the Green Center cemetery.

Pallbearers included Joe Soper, sr., James Whitmore, Bernard Boots, Delbert Grafft, Ray Morning and Leo Bonjour.

Nellie Stivers was soloist. Dorothy Alexander was organist. Flower committee from the Olin E.U.B. church was in charge of floral offerings.

He was born April 26, 1899, son of Jerry and Ella Grassfield, Jackson township, near Olin. He grew to manhood in the Morley community attending Morley Community school.

For many years he lived on the family farm north of Olin, where he had also operated a sawmill. He was injured in a car-train accident 10 years ago and had been in failing health since that time.

He was married to Loretta Darrow, Jan. 25, 1929, at the home of the bride's parents. He was a member of the E.U.B. church, Olin, and the Knights of Pythias lodge, Olin.

He is survived by eight children: Mrs. Erma Cooper, Prairieburg, Richard Grassfield, Ellsworth Airbase, Rapids City, S. Dak.; David Grassfield, Anamosa; Donald Grassfield, Otis Airbase, Massachusetts; Darrel Grassfield, Anamosa; Mrs. Carol Findley, Iowa City; Arnold Grassfield, Anamosa; and Melvin Grassfield, Des Moines.

He is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. Grace Seegar, Morley; Mrs. Edith Russell, Mechanicsville; Mrs. Hazel Furgeson, Lisbon; Mrs. Edna Zaruba, Olin; and Mrs. Wilma Ward, Arnolds Park, Iowa. Fifteen grandchildren, a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive.

Three sons died in infancy or early childhood. Mrs. Grassfield died in November, 1950. He was also preceded in death by both his parents.
