October 3, 1963 - The Anamosa Eureka

Mrs. Sadie A. Gardner, 74, Anamosa city clerk, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 1, at St. Luke's hospital, Cedar Rapids, following an illness of a month.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 1:30 p.m., at the Methodist church. Rev. Ellis Webb conducted the service. Burial was in Riverside cemetery. Goettsch Funeral home, Anamosa, had charge of the arrangements.

Pallbearers included Robert Schumacher, Eldo Schirm, Neil Dougherty, Donald Eichelberger, Roy Rodman and C. D. Randolph.

She was born June 22, 1889, daughter of H. T. Cotton and Mary Moulton Cotton, Anamosa. She attended Anamosa and Boone high school. She was married to Louis Gardner Oct. 3, 1913. She lived her married life in Anamosa.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Jones County Telephone Co., from 1907 to 1909, and for Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., from 1909 to 1913. She started as city clerk April 3, 1933.

She was honored by city employees, officials and their wives at a dinner party April 25, 1958, in observance of her service to the city, as city clerk, for 25 years. She was presented a Grand Wood painting by the group.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary, Mrs. V. K. Rowe, Midland, Mich.; two sons, Robert Gardner, Cedar Rapids, and Charles Gardner, Elmhurst, Ill.; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.
