William "Scorpy" Johnston 1919-1943

Funeral service for Johnston were held this Thursday at 3 o'clock at Smykil's Funeral home. Rev. Homer E. Dalrymple officiated. Burial was at Riverside.

Casket bearers were Herman Adams, Howard Chipman, Chris Conrad, Cecil Farmer, Howard Robertson, and Julius Westphal.

Other members of the fire department acted as honorary casket bearers.

William "Scorpy" Johnston was born Sept. 28, 1919, in Anamosa. He attended the local schools and at the time of his death was employed at Westphal's Stop & Shop market.

He was a member of the Anamosa fire department and was a sergeant-at-arms of the local 4-F club.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Will Johnston, and 10 brothers and sisters, Sidney, Howard, Betty, Robert, Kenneth, Evelyn, Virginia, Gerald and Geraldine are all at home.

Another brother, Sergt. James Johnston, Fort Monmouth, N. J., arrived on a special emergency furlough to attend the funeral.

Field Director of the Red Cross at Fort Monmouth telegraphed local Home Service chairman Wednesday, notifying him that the men of Section 110, Class 27 Officers Candidate school of which Sergeant Johnston is a member had taken up a collection of $14.50 to purchase flowers for their buddy's brother, and asking hm to buy the flowers.
