Eunice Margaret Buol Larson
Eunie was born September 29, 1917 in Monticello, Iowa, one of three girls and three boys raised by George L. and Edna Suter Buol. She graduated from Monticello High and later Cedar Rapids Secretarial School before working in Cedar Rapids. While in Iowa she learned to fly in single engine aircraft, at a time when few women learned to fly, and played standup bass in an all-girl band. After passing the Civil Service exam she moved to Washington DC and joined the War Department in the Office of Dependent Benefits. She was transferred to Puerto Rico during the later years of World War II. While in Puerto Rico she met Chester Arvid Larson from Mora, Minnesota, then serving as a Major in the Signal Corp of the US Army, and they were married in Monticello on June 14, 1947.

Eunie moved with Chet, who worked for the Bell Telephone system, to South Dakota where they had three children, Thomas (1949), Richard (1951), and Linda (1952). The family later moved to Verona, New Jersey, while Chet worked in New York City, and then to Charleston, West Virginia. Eunie was involved in many activities involving school and sports programs for her children, the American Red Cross, and Boy and Girl Scouts. During summers the family traveled often, visiting relatives in Iowa and Minnesota as well as vacations throughout the United States. As the children were graduating from high school, Chet and Eunie moved to McLean, Virginia, in 1968 where she again became involved in volunteer activities. She and Chet were able to travel a great deal, visiting both the Middle East and the Western Pacific. In 1971 she accepted a position as the Director of the Golden Circle at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The Golden Circle supported patrons of the Kennedy Center and for her work there a box seat in the Concert Hall was named in Eunie’s honor.

Retiring from her formal work in 1990, Chet and Eunie moved to Scottsville, Kentucky, to be with their daughter as Linda created and operated Camp CEDAR Center for environmental education. Eunie once again was fully involved in volunteer activities, especially with the Scottsville United Methodist Church, Habitat for Humanity, and as an Allen County election poll worker. Moving to a retirement community in Chicago in December 2012 to be closer to her son, Richard, and daughter-in-law, Jane Winter, Eunie was active in the life of the Montgomery Place community and was known for her sunflower garden where her plants often grew three times her height. A wonderful gathering of family and friends was held at Montgomery Place in 2017 to celebrate her 100th Birthday. She died peacefully in her sleep on September 10, 2020, much loved by all who knew her.

She is survived by her three children, daughters-in-law Jane Winter Larson and Jean Nuechterlein Larson, her grandchildren Samuel W. Larson, Eric W. Larson, Christine E. Larson, and Katherine A. Larson, many nieces and nephews, and many friends. In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made in Eunie’s name to the Scottsville First United Methodist Church, 400 E. Main St., Scottsville, KY 42164 or to the Montgomery Place Fund, 5550 South Lakeshore Dr., Chicago, IL 60637.
