Helen M. Weis
March 29, 1919-January 27, 2011Helen M. (nee: Wroblewski) Weis, age 91, of New Hope, Pa., and formerly of Monticello, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at St Luke's Hospital, Jacksonville, Fla., following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held on May 16, 2011, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello, with interment in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rev. Fr. Keith Birch will officiate at the services.
Helen Marie Wroblewski was born March 29, 1919 in Monticello. She was the daughter of Anton and Florence (nee: Parrott) Wroblewski. Helen graduated from Sacred Heart High School m 1937. She continued her education at Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, where she received her nursing degree in 1941. She worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City until enlisting in the United States Army Nurse Corps m 1943. During WWII, First Lieutenant Helen Weis met her husband, Captain Lester Weis, while both were stationed at Camp Crowder, Mo. They were married on April 10, 1943. Helen was later stationed at William Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas and Lester remained at Camp Crowder before going to Japan m 1945.
Following their discharge from the military, the couple settled in Union, N.J., and started their family. They later moved to Nashville, Term., where Lester was transferred by his employer, Western Electric Co. After her two children started high school, Helen returned to nursing and was the head nurse of a medical-surgical unit at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. She retired from Nursing in 1977, to travel with her husband and daughter through Europe. Helen moved to Wilmington, N.C. in 1978 with Les and lived there until 1998 when they moved to New Hope, Pa., to live with their daughter.
Surviving Helen is two children, James Weis of Jacksonville, Fla. and Kathleen Weis of New Hope; a sister, Betty Schlimmer of Monticello; a brother, Vincent Wroblewski of Cascade; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Lester W. Weis, in 2010.
