August 6, 1942 - The Anamosa Journal

Tragic deaths took a toll at opposite ends of Jones county of lives of a 19-year old farm youth and a 2-year-old farm girl last week end. Janice Hosford was drowned Sunday when she fell into a cement pool of water in the garden at the home of her parents in Castle Grove township.

Janice was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Hosford and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sprague Hosford.

Janice Hosford had followed her father outside when he went to the pasture after the cows. Ordinarily her father took the car and Janice rode with him. Sunday night the lane was too muddy and Lyle had to take the tractor and could not take his daughter with him.

Her mother missed her a few minutes after she had gone outdoors and went in search of her. Janice was laying in 18 inches of water in a cement garden pool. Efforts at artificial resuscitation failed and although a doctor was found, efforts to revive her proved futile.

In addition to the parents, Larry, a 3 1/2-year-old son, survives.

Funeral service was held Wednesday at Gotsch Funeral home at Monticello. Burial was made in Oakwood cemetery.
