12 October 1961 - The Anamosa Eureka

WYOMING--Word has been received in Wyoming of the death of Lt. John L. Madson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon B. Madson, Hampton, who was killed in the crash of an air force F-100c jet fighter plane he was piloting near Gila Bend, Ariz., Wednesday, Sept. 20.

He was on a normal gunnery mission, when his aircraft went out of control and crashed. He was able to eject from the plane, but due to low altitude his parachute did not open. He had been promoted to first lieutenant the day before his death.

John Leon Madson was born Sept. 1, 1926, in Anamosa, the family living in Wyoming at the time. (Leon Madson was on the staff at the Citizens State bank, Wyoming, at that time).

John graduated from the Hampton high school in 1955. He was to have been married to Miss Marilynn Strandine, Chicago, Ill., on Saturday, Oct. 14.

He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leon B. Madson, Hampton; a sister, Mrs. James Jerpbak, Santa Rosa, Calif., and other relatives.
