20 July 1961 - The Anamosa Eureka

Alva Schoon, 59-year-old bachelor, was found dead early Wednesday morning, July 19 in the Amber home he occupied with an older brother.

Dr. John L. Bailey, Anamosa, Jones county medical examiner, listed the cause of death as a suicide, the result of a self-inflicted blast from a .410 gauge shotgun.

Dr. Bailey said there was no known cause for the suicide.

Schoon was found early Wednesday morning lying in the living room of the Amber home he occupied with his brother Bill.

Schoon was last seen about 4 p.m. Tuesday in Amber. It was believed that he gone home and had probably taken his life sometime after 4 p.m. but the incident had gone unnoticed by the older brother who is troubled by poor hearing and eyesight.

It is also believed that the older brother returned home late and went straight to bed without entering the living room where the body was found Wednesday morning.

Funeral services will be held Friday, July 21, at 11 am. at the Goettsch Funeral home, Anamosa. Rev. J. P. Willms will officiate at the service. Burial will be in Wayne cemetery.

He was born May 19, 1902, son of Jacob and Mary Helgen Schoon, on a farm near Amber. He had spent his lifetime in the Amber vicinity and had worked on farms in the area. He had served a short time in the United States army during World war II.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Emma Warner, St. Cloud, Minn.; and three brothers, George Schoon, Adolph Schoon and William Schoon, all of Amber.
