15 February 1940 - The Anamosa Journal

Funeral service was held Wednesday for John R. Breed, 87, Anamosa, oldest lifetime male resident of Jones county, who died at his home Monday following a long illness. Rites, which were conducted by Rev. B. T. Schwab, were held at the home. Burial was made in Norwich cemetery near Martelle. Beam & Miller Funeral home in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers were Dr. L. W. Kellogg, Tony Miller, Lee Bebee, Salvadore Lazio, George Mills and Hubert Metcalf. Miss Florence Hale and Mrs. Vincent Owen sang at the service.

Mr. Breed was born March 1, 1852, the son of Amos and Eliza Breed in Greenfield township. He received his early education in the rural schools and later attended Cornell college at Mount Vernon. He was engaged in farming on the home place until March, 1908 when he retired and moved to Anamosa.

Mr. Breed was married Nov. 22, 1888 to Miss Cora A. Burch, who died in October, 1924.

Three children were born to the couple, two of whom were boys who died in infancy, and a daughter, Glada M., who became Mrs. Oscar Miller, Anamosa.

Mr. Breed was a member of the Knights of Pythias at Martelle, and was also affiliated with the Masonic order.
