19 January 1961 - The Anamosa Eureka

OXFORD JUNCTION--R. E. "Ed" Hill, 65, former newspaper editor and longtime Republican party official, died Monday evening Jan. 16, at his home, Oxford Junction, following a heart attack.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 19, at 1:30 p.m., at the Methodist church. Rev. G. M. Field officiated at the service. Burial was in the cemetery at Lost Nation.

He was born Nov. 24, 1895, son of Mr. and Mrs. William S. Hill, Elwood. He was graduated from Cornell college, Mount Vernon, in 1915, and attended the University of Iowa.

He was married to Alma Christensen, Lost Nation, in 1920. She died in 1937. Feb. 12, 1941, he was married to Laura Ingals, Maquoketa.

Mr. Hill was editor and publisher of the Oxford Mirror, Wyoming Journal and Lost Nation Press for 25 years, retiring in 1953. Anamosa Journal purchased the Oxford Mirror.

He served as secretary of the Iowa Republican Central committee for four years and from 1945 to 1949 served as executive assistant to Gov. Robert D. Blue. For the last six years he had been fieldman with the Federal Crop Insurance Corp. in the Oxford Junction area.

He was a veteran of World war I and a 32nd degree Mason of Harbor lodge, Lost Nation.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Dr. Robert Hill, professor at Ball State Normal college, Muncie, Ind.; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Womachka, Maquoketa and Mrs. Dorothy Kidder, Atlanta, Ga.; and two grandchildren.
