Funeral services were held for Thomas M. Hunwardsen, 83, of Oxford Junction on Friday, Dec. 8, at 10:30 a.m. in the United Methodist Church. The Rev. Kenneth Hamann was the clergyman. Vocalists were Mrs. Hans Ahrendsen and Mrs. Otto Koranda. Organist was Mrs. Richard Woelfle. Burial was at Mayflower Cemetery. Graveside services were conducted by the American Legion, Wapsie Post. Hayden's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Ronald Davis, Bruce VonSprecken, Dennis VonSprecken, Greg Pelo, Richard Ahrendsen and Monte Coon.

Mr. Hunwardsen died at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 1978.

He was born July 10, 1895, at Oxford Junction, the son of Edward and Katrina Hendricksen Hunwardsen. He lived in Oxford Junction all of his life and attended school here. As a young man he was active in sports, especially baseball and played on town teams.

On August 23, 1922, he was married to Bernice Denniston in Oxford Junction. She preceded him in death in 1975.

At the time of his retirement, he was manager of Petersen Produce. At one time he had also been an automobile mechanic.

He was active in community affairs, serving several years as mayor, including 1971, the year of the town's centennial celebration. He was on the city council for 40 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a member of the American Legion and was past commander of Wapsie Post, No. 473. He was also post vice commander of the Second District.

A chapter member of the Oxford Junction Volunteer Fire Department, he was a member of over 50 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and very active in the affairs of the church.

He is survived by one brother, Emile, of Oxford Junction.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
