4 January 1940 - The Anamosa Journal

STONE CITY--Funeral service was held Tuesday at Smykil's Funeral home in Anamosa for Francis Brady, 25, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Brady, living near Stone City, who died in his sleep at the parental home early Saturday morning.

"Jay", as he was known to his friends, retired in good health on Friday evening. His parents heard him breathing heavily during the night, but did not become alarmed, and his death was not discovered until in the morning when his mother called him and he failed to answer.

Survivors are his parents, one brother, Robert, at home; and four sisters, Bernice, at home; Mrs. Ruth Wood, Olin; Mrs. Bessie Jerome, Coggon; and Mrs. Pearl Weaver, Center Point.

Rev. W. T. Brown, pastor of the United Brethren church at Olin, officiated at the rites. Mrs. Joe Clay and Mrs. Thelma Easterly sang "Good Night and Good Morning" and "Have Thine Own Way Lord," with Mrs. Alma Stewart accompanying them.

Casket bearers were Earl Betzer, Clarence Blanchard, Thomas Fousek, Lerow Hanken, John Johnson and Darrell Meredith.

"Jay" was born at Ives, S. Dak., June 6, 1913. He moved to Marion with his parents and was graduated from the high school there. Following his graduation, he helped his brother on the farm. Last fall, he entered the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the freshman football squad. One of the coaches from that institution, Glen Devine, came Saturday to attend the funeral. "Jay" was well known in Anamosa, having been a member of various independent football teams there in recent years.
