8 December 1960 - The Anamosa Eureka

John W. Strickell, 95, Littleton, former Anamosa and Olin resident, died Sunday, Nov. 20, at his home, following a lingering illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m. at the Parker Funeral home, Jesup. Rev. Leo Jeambey, pastor of the Presbyterian church, officiated. Burial was in the Fleming cemetery, north of Winthrop.

Pallbearers were John Jacobsen, Eugene Smith, Gilbert Hamblin, Wesley Hamblin, William Dinnebier and Romaine Leet.

He was born Sept. 27, 1865, son of William and Sarah Nunn Strickell. He was married to Sarah Roof, Winthrop, on Feb. 1, 1893. Eleven children were born to this union. He farmed most of his life in Buchanan county.

Survivors include eight children, William, John and Mrs. F. D. Menuey, Hazelton; Ethel, at home; Mrs. Louis Williams, Independence; Mrs. Len Baughman, Mrs. Harold Cobb and Mrs. Lavere Bantz, Waterloo; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1949; one son and one daughter in infancy, and one son, Raymond, in 1956.
