OLIN--Harlan J. Monroe, 50, Olin, died Thursday morning, June 2, of a self-inflicted rifle wound.

Authorities state that Monroe took his life in a building used as a workshop at the William Larson residence in Olin. Rifle belongs to Larson.

OLIN--Harlan James Monroe, 50, Olin, died on Thursday, June 2, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Prayer service was held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Gordon Freeman, Olin, at 12:45 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

Private funeral service was held at the Campbell Funeral home, Olin, at 1 p.m. Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor of the Olin Evangelical United Brethren church, was in charge of the service. Interment was in the Olin cemetery. American Legion post, Olin, was in charge of the Military rites at the grave.

Pallbearers included Howard Cruise, Raymond James, Willard Hoyman, Arno Lawson, Fred Newcomb and Gerald Lyon.

He was born Feb. 28, 1910, son of James G. and Myrtle Sherman Monroe, near Olin. He grew to manhood in the Olin vicinity and attended the rural schools in the area near his home.

He had lived his entire life in the Olin vicinity with the exception of four years spent in the army during World war II. He served under General Patton in the Fifth Armored division during his military service. He achieved the rank of sergeant while in the service.

He was a member of Blayney-Minor post of the American Legion, Olin.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Woodward, Anamosa; one brother, Lee Monroe, Anamosa; two sisters, Mrs. Dwight Friedley, Cedar Falls, and Mrs. Gordon Freeman, Olin.

Others include his step-mother, Mrs. Elva Monroe, Olin; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
