MARY LOCHER

Mary Locher, 109, the oldest resident in Iowa, died Saturday morning, December 29, at her home in Monticello. Services were held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello with Father Tom Braak officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Friend and relatives called from from two until 9 p.m. Monday at the Devaney-Reiff Funeral Home in Monticello, where wake services were held at seven p.m. Monday evening.

Mary was a life-long member of Sacred Heart Church, a charter member of the Monticello High School Alumni Association, and a charter member of the Monticello American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid reader and letter correspondent. Her many interests also included stamp collection, quilt making and crossword puzzles.

Mary was born June 13, 1875, in Monticello, to Anthony and Caroline (Meyer) Locher. Mary lived in the Monticello area all of her life, except for two years when she taught in Green River, Wyoming, Ekalaka, M. O. Mary was a school teacher in the Monticello schools for twenty five years and a postal clerk for twenty-five years until her retirement in 1940.

She was the oldest of sixteen children and is survived by her sister, Bertha Locher, with whom she resided all of her life; and one brother, Leo, of Columbus, Nebr.; nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, 10 brothers and three sisters.

Memorial may be given to Monticello Public Library and Camp Courageous, Monticello.
