January 10, 1963 - The Tipton Conservative

Mrs. John Amend, 61, mother of Mrs. Ernest Kunde of Tipton, became ill at noon Christmas day at her home while preparing to attend Christmas dinner with her family. She was taken to the Anamosa hospital, where she died a short time afterward.

Services were held Dec. 28 at Wyoming.

Mrs. Mabel Amend was born Aug. 28, 1901, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cook. She lived in Jones county all of her life except for 3 years spent in Rock Island, Ill. Mrs. Amend received her education in the Hale and Wyoming public schools.

She was married to John C. Amend at Anamosa Feb. 8, 1922.

The couple opened their farm home east of Onslow to nieces and nephews when the children were orphaned. She received her early Christian training in the Wyoming Presbyterian church.

Surviving are: her husband; her children, Mrs. Willard (Ruth Mae) Hubler, West Branch; Mrs. Ernest (Marian) Kunde, Tipton; Mrs. Walter (Helen) Wood, who is en route from Belton, Mo., to Tripoli, North Africa; and Bob, at home.

Other survivors include 3 sisters, Mrs. Pearl Oberle, Mrs. Helen Rearick and Mrs. Maxine Vittengl, along with 12 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ruth.

Those attending the funeral from Tipton were Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Kunde and Mrs. William Kunde.
