10 May 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser

Anamosa, Ia., May 8--The announcement of the death of Mrs. Abigail Doyle at the home of her son, William Doyle, in Utica, Neb., will bring to the mind of the older settlers of this vicinity remembrances of the Condit family, of which Mrs. Doyle was one of the older members. In 1856 Alvin Condit came to Cass township from Condit, Ohio, with his family of three married sons, three married daughters and three younger sons. Mr. Condit was well-to-do for those days and seeing that there was probably a chance to make a comfortable sum from the rise of land, which was then about $10 per acre, and might go higher, he invested largely in land near what is now Cass Center. He not only bought a farm for himself, but assisted his married children to secure farms for themselves and families. As the time went on the unmarried sons also married and settled near the home. The family was always active in improving conditions and the Congregational church, which still stands in Cass, was built, in large measure through the influence and money of the Condits. It seemed as if Cass might almost be called Conditville, and for a short time there was a postoffice at the center called Condit. Still the years rolled on. One decided to move elsewhere, there was death and other changes and now in this year of 1916, sixty years after, there is not a Condit living in Cass or Anamosa. Mrs. William Hale, who resides in Cass, is a granddaughter of Alvin Condit and the rest are scattered far and wide. Four sons of the original family are still living, though all well advanced in years. Robert in Los Angeles, Cal., J. S., in Nebraska, Edgar in Daytona, Fla., and Albert in Riverside, Cal. Mrs. Doyle had reached the advanced age of nearly 88. Her husband had been dead some years and she had resided with her oldest son since that event. She is also survived by one other son, Charles, who lives at Wapinitia, Wash.
