CASCADE, Iowa - William J. "Bill" Aschtgen, 84, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Cascade, lost his hard-fought battle against cancer on Monday, May 23, 2005, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello, with the Rev. Al Polito officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Monticello Drill Team. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Aschtgen worked at Ipsen Industries, retiring in October 1981.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1921, in Cascade, son of Eugene and Mable (Gearhart) Aschtgen.

He was educated in the Cascade schools and enlisted in the Army in November 1942. He served in Africa and Italy and was discharged in November 1945.

He married June Brokaw on Feb. 23, 1946, in Monticello. Together they moved to Rockford in March.

Surviving are his wife, June; a son, William Dale Geordt, of Cherry Valley, Ill.; four daughters, Kathryn (Louis) Dorsey and Jane (Rodney) Bowen, both of Rockford, Donna (James) Howard, of Pearl City, Ill., and Lori (K.C.) Lassard, of Duluth, Minn.; 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and a twin sister, Clara Shafer, of Rockford.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Alan Eugene; his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.

Memorials may be given to the Swedish American Regional Cancer Center of Rockford.
