Jay Le Roy Appleby, 65, passed away Monday morning, May 9, 2005, in his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello. Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, United Church of Monticello. The Rev. Edwin Moreano will officiate. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Monticello.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Jay Le Roy Appleby was born on July 11, 1939, in Wyoming, Iowa, the son of John and Josephine Rigby Appleby. He worked for Bader Masonry of Monticello until his retirement.

He was a member of the Worthington Sportsman Club, Ducks Unlimited and Knights of Pythias. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his faithful canine companion, Annie.

Jay Le Roy will be deeply missed by his two daughters, Paula Mathis of Inwood, W.Va., and Lee Anne Appleby of North Richland Hills, Texas; four grandchildren, Gary Lee, Molly and Daniel Mathis and Nathaniel Appleby; four brothers, Junior (Suzie) Appleby of Derby, Kan., Joseph "Ernie" Appleby of Monticello, Jeff Appleby of Anamosa and Jerry (Ruth) of Fort Walton, Fla.; and two sisters, Judy (Bob) Kaune and Janet (Tom) Mai, all of Monticello.

Jay Le Roy was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James and John "Jack;" and two sisters, Jeraldine Milroy and Jo Ann Appleby.
