Roman Haag, 77, of Monticello, passed away Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Monticello, by the Rev. Donald Schmitt. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where the Monticello Drill Team will conduct military honors. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Kramer Funeral Home, Monticello, with a parish Scripture service at 6:30 p.m., followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Roman was born Feb. 13, 1926, in Parkston, S.D., the son of Gregor and Dora Fritza Haag. He graduated with the Class of 1944 from Sacred Heart School in Monticello and served his country from 1945 and 1946 in the U.S. Army. He married Kathryn Connolly on Sept. 10, 1946, in Monticello. Roman was employed at the local John Deere implement dealership and then began working at the Monticello Post Office for 28 years, retiring in 1990. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan who also enjoyed bowling, fishing, following the grandchildren's activities, woodworking and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn; two sons, Jerry (Dianne) Haag and Tom (Tina) Haag, both of Monticello; a daughter, Marla (Jerry) Hinrichs of Monticello; nine grandchildren, Aimee, Jason, John, Dan and Teresa Haag, and Mark, Chris, Brian and Kayla Hinrichs; two great-grandchildren, Aurelius "Max" Haag and Grace Hinrichs; a sister, Lucille Loomis of Monticello; two brothers, Virgil (Lorraine) Haag of Monticello and Gregory (Claretta) Haag Jr. of New Orleans, La.; and two sisters-in-law, Wilma Haag and Germaine Haag, both of Monticello.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Vic and Vincent Haag; and a brother-in-law, Bob Loomis. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sacred Heart School or the American Cancer Society.
