Edna Smith, 78, Buried at Olin

Olin - Edna O. Smith, 78, Olin, died May 15 in the Anamosa Community hospital following a heart attack.

A family prayer service was held in St. Paul's church, Olin, at noon Saturday, with a memorial service at the church at 1:30 p.m. Rev. Lloyd Dutro, pastor of St. Paul's church, and Rev. Robert Christensen, pastor of the Wyoming United Methodist church, were in charge of the service. Mrs. Leon Stivers was organist. Soloist was Gary Burhop, who sang, "Trust and Obey" and "The Child of the King". Burial was in the Olin cemetery.

Pallbearers included Arvene Doering, Donald Mackey, Galen Etten, John Burhop Jr., Robert M. Brinkman and Larry Stutt.

Edna Olive Miller Smith was born Sept. 5, 1889, the daughter of John Jacob and Josephine Nance Miller near New Holland, S. Dak. The family lived in South Dakota until she was about 10 years of age when they moved to Iowa, settling in the Olin community.

She attended school in Olin where she graduated from the high school in 1910. She was married to Forest D. Carl on October 21, 1910. Mr. Carl died in October, 1918.

June 14, 1920 she married William G. Smith. Mr. Smith also preceded her in death. Following her marriage to Mr. Smith, the family lived in Moulton for several years where she owned and operated a photograph studio. Upon return to Olin, she served for a number of years as a telephone operator in Olin and Wyoming.

She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist church in Olin, and a member of the W.S.C.S. of the church. She also supervised and taught in the children's division of the Sunday school for several years.

Survivors include three daughters: Frances Carl, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Lumir (Ruby) Holub, Wyoming; and Mrs. Huston (Irma) Barr, Palo Alto, Claif.; one son, Melvin Carl, Anamosa, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Clarence Miller, Nichols.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, one sister, who died in infancy, and one brother, Loyal Miller.

For the past 2 years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Holub.
