Somewhat of the Life of Mrs. Vannatta of Olin.
The recent death of Mrs. Eliza Vannatta of Olin, grandmother of Mrs. J. W. Jamison of Anamosa, who lived with her grand-daughter, Mrs. Dr. J. A. While. Mrs. Vannatt's maiden name was Allen. She was born at Balwinsville, Onandoga county, New York, in the year 1800, was the daughter of a captain in the Revolutionary army, and came of English ancestry. In her youth she was a beauty and a belle, and all the young men of her native county and the counties adjoining, admired and sought the captain's daughter.

She was married three times. Her first husband's name was (Stephen) Burroughs. Four children were the fruit of this marriage, and these were the only heirs of her body. Two of them yet survive: Mrs. Almina Herrick of Olin, and Mrs. Fidelia Shields who lives in California.

Mrs. Vannatta remained a widow 25 years after the death of Mr. Burroughs between (1870 and 1880 in Reading, Perry Co., OH). Then she married Mr. Dove in the town of Canal-Winchester, near Columbus, Ohio, whither her family had removed.

After a few years she was again left a widow with a comfortable living and resolved to pass the rest of her days alone. But it was otherwise ordained.
She was very devoted in religious work and prominent in the United Brethren church. Her third marriage was to Mr. Vannatta, a leading farmer and a good brother in church. Mr. Vannetta died in Winchester, and about ten years ago she came to Iowa. Her death occurred at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, Jan. 26, consequently she had crossed the threshold of her ninetieth year.

There are 3 other citizens in Olin or vicinity who have reached the upper rounds of the ladder of life. Geo. Rummel, who will be 90 the 10th of March, Samuel Holden, who will be 90 in July, and Hassan Monroe, senior, who is 93.
