Buchanan County Bulletin, Friday, Nov 05, 1875, Independence, IA, Page: 2

Two men stopped the horses of Mr. John Kerns, a mile or two out of Monticello one dark night about two weeks ago, demanding his money. Mr. Kerns protested he had none, one of the men began to clamber into the wagon to search him, while the other held the horses by the heads. Mr. Kerns quickly turned the loaded butt of his whip and brought it down upon the head of the robber felling him senseless, and then giving his horses a cut, the other ruffian was knocked down and the wagon passed over him. They were not seen afterwards.
