Dubuque Daily Times, Sunday, July 19, 1874, Dubuque, Iowa, Page: 2

Last Tuesday evening, Mr. Frank Dietz, and wife, E. M. Stickney, and wife, Miss Jennie Peaslee, daughter of A. H. Peaslee, formerly of Anamosa and now of Dubuque, Miss Nellie Fowler and Miss Ada Lull partook of ice-cream at the restaurant of Wm. Hueper, and, with the exception Mrs. Frank Dietz and Miss Lull, were more or less seriously poisoned. Mrs. C. N. Dietz was taken seriously ill about 11 o’clock, with burning sensations in the throat and stomach. Mr. G. P. Dietz went for a physician, and in his absence Charley was thrown into spasms and his muscles became rigid. About two o’clock Mr. and Mrs. Stickney, Miss Fowler and Miss Peaslee were reported seriously ill, having similar burning sensations, accompanied with serious vomiting. Another physician was immediately sent for and the proper antidotes given. Mr. Frank Dietz did not suffer and serious consequences. The other afflicted ones have nearly or quite recovered from their dangerous illness. Doctors Blakeslee and Hurst made a thorough examination of the ice-cream and the freezer, but the source of the poison could not be ascertained. They also tasted of the ice-cream and experienced the same burning and smarting in the throat. No blame is attached to Mr. Hueper, but the event caused a sensation and is an unexplained mystery-Anamosa Eureka, July 16th.
