ARRESTED – Mr. Charles Hill, who attempted to shoot Samuel Woodworth, and did finally wound a brother, E. M. Woodworth, last summer, was arrested on Monday by Deputy Sheriff Parks. In order to recall the circumstances of the array we will briefly state the facts.

On the 16th of July, 1875, Hill, who was in the employ of Samuel Woodworth, had some trouble with him. Finally Hill drew a pistol and attempted to shoot Woodworth in his own house but latter took refuge in the bedroom and barred the door. The women, in the meantime, screamed murder and E. M. Woodworth, of Dubuque, a brother, came running from the barn and pursued Hill. The latter turned on him and discharged his pistol within a few inches of his face, the ball passing through his hat and the powder nearly destroying his eye. A luckily stumble alone saved his life. Hill then escaped, was pursued but without avail. Some six weeks ago he returned to Castle Grove and entered the employ of Lucius Allen. It was not long before Sheriff Babcock heard of Hill and he speedily determined on his capture, for which there had been a reward for $200 by the Woodworth brothers. As Hill was acquainted with the Sheriff, deputy Parks was sent out from Monticello in company with two chicken hunters. It so happens as they drove up to Allen’s as a rain came on and Hill was putting out the team. The hunters were also obliged to turn in of course, and before Hill could say “Jack Robinson” he was under arrest.

Hill afterwards remarked that he was suspicious of the party, but as they has dogs and guns and he was acquainted with two of the three men, he was completely thrown off his guard until too late.

The incident now standing against him is for assault on Samuel Woodworth. We understand he will be bailed out by parties at Monticello. His bonds are $700.

Hill has been arrested on charge of assault of E. M. Woodworth with intent to commit murder. The preliminary examination will take place before Bradley Stuart next Saturday, at Monticello.
