Elizabeth “Bettie” Campion, 82 of Iowa City., died peacefully Wednesday, February 15, 2006, at Greenwood Manor.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am, Monday, February 20, 2006 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Phillips officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. A luncheon at the church hall will follows the services. Friends may call Sunday from 3 to 7pm at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 4pm and a Vigil Service will be held at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Wenceslaus Church or the Catholic Community Foundation for Regina

Bettie was born in Johnson County on August 31, 1923 the daughter of Jesse and Mary Barry Seydel. Bettie was a 1941 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School and on January 31, 1944 she married Robert Campion in Iowa City. For many years Bettie and her family lived at 422 3rd Avenue, but since 2002 due to declining heath, Betty had resided at Walden Place and Melrose Meadows later moving to Greenwood Manor.

Bettie and her husband farmed east of Iowa City for many years. They also owned the Oakbrook Mobile Home Court in Hiawatha for more than a decade. Bettie had been employed at the University of Iowa for thirty one years, in Resident Services and Vending, retiring in 1992.

Bettie was a member of St. Wenceslaus and the Altar and Rosary Society, Ladies of the Moose and the Sew and Blow Club. She volunteered at the Johnson County Senior Center where she was active with the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Bettie received recognition for her commitment to volunteer services from former Governor Terry Branstad.

Bettie had a green thumb, loved to cook and enjoyed Iowa City and its cultural diversity.

Bettie is survived by her five children:
Ronald J. (Carol) Campion of Las Vegas, NV and their children Nicole, Chad and Jason Campion; Barbara J. (Michael) Stimmel of Iowa City and their children Bradley, Kimberly Coyne and Carmine Yankowski; Patricia J. Campion of Iowa City; Debra J. (Robert) Sass of Iowa City and their sons Jared and Caleb; Tamara J. “TJ” Campion of Boulder, CO. and her daughters Amber and Aspen; three great grandchildren, Logan, Annabelle, and Elizabeth Stimmel; and two sisters, Loretta Saunders and Eleanor Bennett, both of Naples, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bob, her brother Sylvester ‘Sy” Seydel and her sister Mary Eloise Dick.
