Dr. Nancy Thompson, a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and tireless advocate for her faith and community, passed away peacefully, Friday, September 20, 2024; leaving behind a lasting legacy of love, compassion, and service. She was the proud and loving mother of four sons: Larry, Darrin (Christine), Brian (Rachelle), and Victor (Kim), and her heart overflowed with joy for her eight beloved grandchildren; Spencer, Maddy, Max, Evan, Lilly, Colin, Reece, and Noah. Her family was her greatest source of pride, and she blessed their lives with unconditional love and unwavering support.

Though she is reunited in heaven with her sister Christine and her sister-in-law Claudette, Nancy’s memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her surviving brothers, Darrell, Ronnie (Sandy), and Rick (Claudette), with whom she shared a close-knit bond throughout her life.

Nancy’s journey of faith was truly extraordinary. As a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, she not only grew the order locally but also helped expand its reach nationally through her work on the Provincial Council. Her deep spirituality inspired countless individuals, and her leadership in the Carmelites was a testament to her lifelong commitment to serving God.

She also dedicated her talents to education, teaching religion at Xavier High School and imparting wisdom to generations of students. Nancy’s passion for inclusivity and advocacy was evident in her work with the Diocese of Des Moines and her role as Director of Programs and Diocesan Relations with the National Catholic Partnership on Disability (NCPD). Among her many achievements, she helped create the parish resource “Making Room for Persons with Disabilities,” ensuring that everyone was welcomed and valued in the church.

Her dedication was recognized when she was awarded the Distinguished Service Award in 2014 by the National Conference for Catechetical Leadership, a fitting tribute to her decades of service.

Nancy lived a life filled with grace, humility, and purpose. She touched the lives of all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of faith, kindness, and service to others. Her remarkable work, deep faith, and loving heart will be cherished and remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she enriched.

May Nancy’s soul rest in the eternal peace she so richly deserves, and may her memory be a blessing to all who were fortunate to know her.
