Dennis Michael Wieland, 77, of Iowa City passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024 at UIHC. A gathering to remember Dennis will be held from 2-4 PM on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at The Kirkwood Room, Iowa City.
Dennis was born on March 15, 1947 in Valley City, ND, the son of Richard and Mary (Hagensen) Wieland. He graduated from St. Catherine's High School in 1965 and North Dakota State University in 1970. Dennis married Veronica (Ronnye) Borg on August 16, 1969. They moved to Iowa City where Dennis worked as a pharmacist.
Dennis loved spending time with his wife, Ronnye, and children Chelse and Aaron. He adored his four grandchildren. He was passionate about justice and truth, gave generously and loved being outdoors. His childhood on the family farm never left him, and he loved the land and its community. He was curious about people's background and loved learning their stories. Even in his most difficult hours he always said "thank you" and wanted to know everyone's name. Dennis was inquisitive about the world and his family welcomed exchange students from Holland, France and Spain; he loved hosting 4 Russians during the 1988 US-Soviet peace walk. He had a dry sense of humor greatly appreciated by family and friends and loved the thrill of a game of cribbage, the roll of dice in craps and rooting for the Hawkeyes. In his final days he joked, "I’m not coming back, and we’re NOT going back."
Dennis is survived by his wife, Ronnye; two children, Chelse (Jeff) Wagner, and Aaron (Shannon) Wieland; four grandchildren, Bailey, Gwyneth, Clarence and Marion Wieland; seven brothers, Lloyd (Audrey) Wieland, Larry (Ann) Wieland, Jerry (Sherry) Wieland, Marty (Judy) Wieland, Maurice (Rosemary) Wieland, Vic (Cindy) Wieland, Ron Wieland and four sisters; Jean (Dan) Rietze, Elaine (Wes) Kucera, Beth (Mike) Dardis and Pat Tingle, and sister-in-law Carmel Wieland.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Wieland; sister-in-law, Halima Wieland; and brother-in-law, Dan Tingle.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Civil Liberties Union or a local food bank.
