Nancey Lorene (Coplin) Schneider of Iowa City, Iowa, died peacefully with her family around her on June 6, 2024 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was 74 years old.

Born on January 10, 1950, in Dearborn, Michigan to Stella (Brown) Hiscott and Joseph Coplin, she was the only daughter and second of four siblings. The family relocated to Glendale, California where she spent her childhood and early years. She attended Eagle Rock High School near Pasadena, California.

Nancey enjoyed art, poetry, song writing, playing her guitar, and listening to Elvis, the Beach Boys and the Beatles. In 1969, she married Harry “Joe” Schneider. They moved to Palm Desert, California and had their only child. Nancey loved being a mother and devoted her time to being the best mother she could be. In 1974, they moved to Newton, Iowa. Nancey attended Des Moines Area Community College and studied Early Childhood Education with a focus on Developmental Disabilities. She later followed her daughter and her family with a move to Iowa City where she lived out her life.

Nancey explored a variety of interesting career opportunities – she sold Avon, Tupperware, bartended, was a private investigator, childcare provider and customer service representative. Nancey loved all animals and always had a houseful of dogs, cats and birds as pets. She enjoyed cooking and baking, watercolor painting, gardening, birdwatching, camping, hiking, reading, watching movies and watching the weather to let her family know when storms were coming in. She followed current events and politics closely and was an advocate for causes she was passionate about. Above all Nancey loved and cherished being a grandmother to Ashley, Drew and Evan. She was lovingly called Grandma Ghee by the grandchildren and provided them with countless adventures and experiences. She was very proud of their talents and accomplishments and always cheered them on in their games, concerts, plays, and activities.

Those left to forever love and honor her memory include her daughter, Shane Schemmel and son-in-law Tim (Iowa City, IA), brothers: Rick Placer (Las Vegas, NV) and Curtis Coplin (Pleasanton, CA) and her grandchildren: Evan (Iowa City, IA), Drew (Des Moines, IA) and Ashley (Phoenix, AZ). Nancey is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Danny Coplin.

Private family burial will take place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.
