Marcia Courtney Culver, 72, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully in her home on Wednesday May 22, 2024.

Marcia’s many passions ranged from cats, cooking, and gardening to literature, classical music, and cinema, from camping in the Rockies to composing photographic collages. An avid traveler who loved Paris best of all places, for day-to-day life, she generally preferred small towns and rural settings. Intelligence and empathy, warmth and wit, good humor and a ready smile were hallmarks of her personality.

Born and raised in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, Marcia fulfilled her dream of experiencing life in New York City by going to college at Barnard. She then earned a Ph.D. in English at Princeton, where she met her partner, Dennis Moore. After they moved to the Midwest, she enjoyed a long career as a writer, researcher, and editor, primarily at the University of Iowa.

Shortly after retiring, Marcia was diagnosed with endometrial cancer, a challenge she met with typical clear-sightedness and strength of will. She was profoundly grateful for a dozen years of compassionate care by Dr. David Bender, M.D., and his colleagues at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Memorial donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice, which provided comfort and care during Marcia's final six weeks. At her request, there will be no memorial service.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents: Betsy and Myron Culver and her brother, David. Survivors include Dennis Moore (Iowa City); Marcia’s sister, Jane Culver (Plainfield, VT); Jane's daughters: Becky Sporbert (London, UK), Liz Thompson (Bromsgrove, UK), and Kari White (St. Johnsbury, VT) and their families; as well as a close circle of beloved friends.
