James Dean Pregon, 68, of Coralville, passed away suddenly Monday, April 29, 2024. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Iowa City Fire Department, or Rotary-Kerber Heartsafe Community Campaign, to offer community training.

James was born on March 31, 1956 in Ottumwa, IA the son of Edward and Jeannette (Richards) Pregon. He was a 1974 graduate of Ottumwa High School. James was the drum major and played the French Horn in the OHS band. He was active in several singing groups including Madrigal. In music class he met the love of his life, Karen Nehre, he impressed her with his voice. They were married on May 24, 1975 in Ottumwa. James and Karen moved to Iowa City where they had their daughter, Elayne. He was the finance manager for Winebrenner-Ford before becoming Johnson County Deputy Treasure for over 26 years. James retired in December of 2018.

James was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in North Liberty, IA and also a past member of the Iowa City Jaycee’s. He enjoyed classic car shows and puzzles in his free time. James also loved to work in the yard and enjoy a beautiful spring day.

James is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Elayne Pregon of Coralville; son-in-law, Steve Gustoff of North Liberty; and some extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Michael Nicholson.
