Sophia Evelyn (Garrett) Lenoch, 97, of Iowa City, passed peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Friday, April 19.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, April 25 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Iowa City with Father Ed Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 10:00am-11:00am at St. Wenceslaus prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Iowa City Hospice and Iowa City Catholic Worker Safe House and Shelter.

Born May 20, 1926, in Drury Township, Rock Island County, IL, Sophia was the daughter of James and Dorothy (Fuller) Garrett. She graduated from Muscatine High School in 1944 and moved to Iowa City, where she enrolled in the Mercy School of Nursing, and met the love of her life, John Anthony Lenoch of Iowa City. She completed her RN in 1947, and was inducted to the United States Nurse Cadet Corps.

On April 3, 1948, she was married to John Lenoch. The couple raised seven children in the northside of Iowa City. They enjoyed golfing and the outdoors and were longtime members of Hi-Point Golf Course. They enjoyed traveling on family vacations, spending time with family and friends, and watching Iowa Hawkeye sporting events. Sophia also enjoyed gardening and bird watching.

When the Iowa women’s basketball team recently defeated LSU in the NCAA Regional Championship to advance to the Final Four, she stood up and said, “We’ve got to dance after that!”

Sophia worked as a nurse and later for several years at The Stable Clothing Store. She was a member of the Mercy Guild and served on the Angels of Mercy Committee, creating annual Angel ornaments to raise funds for the Guild.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and Altar & Rosary. She was a proud and loyal volunteer at Mercy Hospital of Iowa City, logging over 30 years and 10,000 hours.

Sophia is survived by her seven children: David (Bev Pennell) Lenoch, Cindy Cummings, Kathy (Mike) Steffen, Fran (Dennis) Griffin, Susan Lenoch, Janet (Steve) Roe and Celia (Rick) Eckermann; 15 grandchildren, Katy DeMeulenaere, Andrea Beeson, Michelle Cummings, Marcus Cummings, Bryan Steffen, Casey Steffen, Bridgette Meinhold, Scott Griffin, Tony Griffin, Kelly Griffin, Ben Mitchell, Nike Fleming, James Roe, Kacie Prottsman and Nile Eckermann; 24 (soon to be 25) great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lenoch; her parents; two brothers (Wayne and Floyd Garrett), son-in-law Mike Cummings, twin great-granddaughters, and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, and nieces and a nephew.

The entire Lenoch family would like to especially thank Brandy Mitchell (granddaughter -in-law) and nurse Sarah from Iowa City Hospice for the loving care they provided Sophia.
