It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Brent DeNeice, who left us peacefully on April 16th, 2024, at the age of 60. A cherished husband to Chris, a devoted father to Shelby, Kiaya, Olivia, John, (Scooter and Louie) and a loving grandfather to Myla and Pax, (Riggins, Trooper, Goldie, Pacha, Sofia, Stan, Diesel, Lolli, CC, Mojo, and Stella) who they adoringly called Paka.

Born October 1st, 1963, in Denver, CO, Brent was one of eight children born to Dan and Carolyn DeNeice. Brent adored his siblings and kept his strong Colorado ties with them after moving his family to Iowa. There was nothing that could take the place of weekly phone calls and visits with each of them.

Brent was known for his enormous heart and his exceptional ability to forge lasting relationships. From an early age, he was “the helper”. He possessed an uncanny ability for finding the person in the room who could use someone to talk to or needed help. His conversational prowess meant he never met a stranger, only a friend he hadn’t made yet. This transformed into a lifelong commitment to working with kids. Although it began with advocating for people with disabilities, it ended with working with students all over the school district. He spread his unique sense of style and outlook on life to many.

A constant figure at any event that involved anyone in his family, his unwavering support and dedication to them was undeniable. His love extended to his canine companions, who were his adoring and loyal furry friends until his last days.

While Brent was not the most articulate man, much to his family’s entertainment, he was exceptional at sharing his love and pride for his girls in writing. For every birthday, he spent an evening writing a heartfelt letter to summarize another wonderful year together to his daughters and granddaughter. He also wrote weekly postcards to Myla, which she will cherish forever.

Brent was an avid music lover and had a particular fondness for Bruce Springsteen, whose music often filled the background of many family gatherings. If Brent wasn’t with family, he was tackling a house project, researching parts for the Mustang, or spending time in his yard with his dogs. His humorous struggles with projects were well-known to neighbors and his son-in-law, John, who all chipped in to help him safely complete the task. And yes, his favorite indulgence, Dr. Pepper, was always at his side.

His kindness, generosity, ready smile, and yes, his colorful language, will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Brent leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and the joy of simple pleasures. He truly was “Tougher Than the Rest”.

Please join us on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City from 3-6pm to remember a man who was truly the backbone of his family, a loyal friend, and an ever-present source of strength and love. There will be time for friends and family to gather from 3-5pm, and a time for sharing stories from 5-6pm. Shorts are optional. We will end the evening with drinks and appetizers at Blackstone. All are welcome.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Iowa Humane Alliance, Cedar Rapids. This is an organization that Brent was proud to be a part of and even more proud that his daughter led him to it.
