Ron was a graduate of Iowa City City High School, after which he proudly served his country as a Corporal in the United States Marine Corps from 1956 to 1957. Continuing his commitment to serve others, Ron furthered his education by earning a Fire Science Certificate from Kirkwood Community College, which paved the way for a distinguished career with the Iowa City Fire Department, retiring as Captain.

His leadership and bravery were an inspiration to all those who worked by his side. Apart from his professional life, Ron was a devout member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and took great pride in his faith and community, actively participating in the Knights of Columbus. Ron’s spirit of generosity extended far beyond the walls of the church and into every aspect of his life, touching the hearts of those around him.

Ron's love for life could be seen in his various hobbies. An avid fisherman, he cherished the tranquility of being surrounded by nature, a reflection of his calm demeanor. His garden was a source of pride and joy; it not only showcased his patience and care but also his desire to share the harvest with family and friends, embodying his generous spirit. Most of all, Ron loved spending time with his family, instilling values of kindness and selflessness.

He is lovingly remembered by his sons, Scott (Stacie) Whittaker of Boone, IA, Mark (Carrie) Whittaker, and Bret Whittaker, all of Iowa City; his cherished brother, Gary (Joyce) Marburger of Sherman, TX.; and his adored grandchildren, Riley, Nicholas (Ellie Wallace), Abigail, Gracie, and Anna, who will miss their grandfather's gentle guidance and boundless affection.

Ron was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sally, in 2022, and by his parents, Richard and Helen (Clark) Whittaker. The loss of Ron is deeply felt by his family, who take comfort in the knowledge that he is now reunited with his loved ones who have passed before him.

Captain Ronald "Ron" Gene Whittaker will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his enduring spirit will continue to influence those who strive to live a life as honorable as his. Though we say farewell to this remarkable man, his story remains etched in our memories, and his lessons of love and service forever part of our community's history.
