Martha (Marty) Maureen Fields died July 27, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, Iowa, surrounded by her children and close family.

A visitation will be held Sunday, July 30, from 2-4pm, at Lensing Funeral Home, 605 Kirkwood Avenue, Iowa City, Iowa. A memorial Mass will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 3000 12th Avenue, Coralville, Iowa, on Monday, July 31, at 11am. A celebration of life reception will immediately follow the service.

Marty was born August 2, 1943 in Ames, Iowa, to Joseph James Judge and Mildred Elizabeth Judge. She graduated from Ames High School, and attended Iowa State University, where she met Robert Fields. They married in 1963, and moved to St. Louis. She completed her undergraduate degree in education at Webster College. Their family grew to include five children: Jeffrey, Karrie, Matthew, Daniel, and David. After their divorce, Marty went back to college, earning her M.B.A. from St. Ambrose University, while working for Hon Industries and being a single mom.

In 1993, she moved to Iowa City, Iowa, and began working, first at an architecture firm, and then at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in various roles, eventually as the administrator for the dean of the College of Dentistry, Dr. Kirk Fridrich. She retired from that role in May of 2015, but she never really retired. She immediately began volunteering at the Free Medical Clinic in Iowa City, serving as a board member for many years. She also served as a volunteer and board member for TRAIL of Johnson County, which helps older adults successfully age in place independently. She was also active in the St. Thomas More Social Justice Commission, which advocates for racial and social justice, with special regard for the poor and vulnerable. She was a longtime member of the Newman Center. She was also extremely active in the Alcoholics Anonymous community, sponsoring and helping many with their battles with addiction, and hosting meetings at her home.

Marty was a generous person and a loyal friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her sisters, Mary (Judge) Merchant and Annie Judge, and by her five children and their spouses, Jeffrey (Megan), Karrie (Dustin), Matthew (Justine), Daniel (Rebecca), and David (Heidi). She deeply loved her children, and what she loved most was spending time with her 11 grandchildren: Lauren, Megan, Ethan, Jacob, Mia, Ellie, Eli, Liam, Michael, Katelyn, and Joshua. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Marty was preceded in death by her father, Joseph, and mother, Mildred.

In her final days, we had many beautiful conversations about what she most wanted to be remembered for. Marty was proud to live her life guided by the hand of God, and grateful to pass her blessings on to others.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Iowa City Free Medical and Dental Clinic.
