Kenneth Bowen, 72, of Iowa City, passed away on April 11, 2023.
The family will receive visitors from 11am-12pm on Monday, April 17, 2023 at Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. A Celebration of Life service will begin at noon. A light reception will follow at The Kirkwood Room in Iowa City.
Kenn was born on December 23, 1950 in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Bill and Trudy (Dykehouse) Bowen. He graduated from Davenport West High School in 1969. Following discharge from the United States Navy, Kenn and Patricia Barta were united in marriage on December 30, 1971. The couple moved to Waterloo where Kenn attended the Hawkeye Institution of Technology and received his horticulture degree. After 30 years of employment, Kenn retired from the local telephone company. He was currently employed part-time at CSC in Iowa City.
Throughout his life, Kenn endured and conquered many hardships. He was a survivor of liver disease and successfully underwent a liver transplant in 2015. Kenn’s life was filled with an abundance of blessings, hobbies and joy. He was an avid reader, especially about history and science-fiction, including graphic novels and comic books. He loved to cook, garden and was a huge fan of music of all genres. Kenn loved riding his bicycle and motorcycle, playing catch with his daughters and granddaughter, traveling, and playing all kinds of games like Cribbage, Euchre, and Trivial Pursuit. He was a lifelong NY Yankees and Iowa Hawkeye fan. He and Pat had season tickets to the Iowa Women’s basketball team for the past ten years. Kenn volunteered his time to organizations such as Table2Table, Riverside Theatre, United Way, Iowa City Senior Center, Veterans for Peace, and KFMG and KICI radio stations.
Kenn is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Pat; daughters: Jennifer Bowen (David Burt), Amanda (Curtis) Hilger, and Elizabeth Bowen; grandchildren: Sierra Cupp, Elianno, Jonah and Maeve Bowen-Burt, and Emeline and Bowen Hilger, as well as his sister, Ann Bowen. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family requests that no flowers be sent. Memorial contributions may be made to CCI/CCI Action, ACLU Iowa or Veterans for Peace.
