Ruth E. Carthey, age 90 of Iowa City died April 8, 2023, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 11am Friday, April 14, 2023, at Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service where there will be a time of visitation from 9am until services on Friday at the funeral home. Entombment will take place at the Mausoleum at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Iowa City. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Ruth’s memory to Camp Courageous (12007 190th. Ruth Eleanor Carr was born August 13, 1932, in LeMonte, MO, the daughter of Nathan and Mildred (Williams) Carr. Her family moved to Tipton area where she attended schools graduating from Tipton High School, then later attending and graduating from University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls with her teaching degree. On June 11, 1955, she married Frank R. Carthey. Ten years later they moved to Iowa City where both she and her husband worked for the Iowa City Community Schools, Ruth as a teacher for over 30 years and Frank as a guidance counselor at City High School both retiring in 1992.

She was a longtime member of the St. Mark’s Methodist Church, National Education Association and the University Club. Ruth was an avid supporter of the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, various local community theaters and Hancher Auditorium. She enjoyed traveling all 50 states of the United States and a number of foreign countries. But nothing topped being married to Frank, mom to her children and grandma to her four grandchildren and enjoying all of her extended family!

Her family includes her two children, Laura Wait (Jon) and Bradley Carthey (Marcia); grandchildren, Nathan Wait (Emma), Cristina Carthey, Benjamin Carthey, and Abigail Carthey.

She was precede in death by her parents, husband, brother, William Carr, and special friend, Leonard Hixson.
