Harry Jude Samms (age 86) of Iowa City, passed away February 28, 2023 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines.

He is survived by his four children: daughter, Dr. Kait Meeker and her husband, Glenn and her daughter, Cari, daughter, Krissy Mahan, son, Harry M. “Bud” Samms and his wife, Sara and their children: Tighe and Rowdie, and son, Greg Samms and his wife, Angela and their son, Jack.

He will be laid to rest in St Joseph Cemetery, in Iowa City.

Harry was born May 7, 1936 to Mary (Finnegan) and Harry Samms in Camden, New Jersey. Sadly, his mother passed away during childbirth. Harry was raised by the entire Finnegan “clan” of New Jersey, and they were always very near to his heart. Harry was proud and grateful of his Irish Catholic upbringing.

He served in the US Navy for 4 years, then married Carol (Mahan) and started his family and a career in electrical sales and distribution. He worked for several companies; primarily as a sales representative then later in management, always achieving top sales recognition and awards. He also earned degrees in marketing and management along the way.

Later in life, Harry was united in marriage to Myrna (Sayers), who had been his nurse and had her own distinguished career at University of Iowa Hospital - he always swore that she had saved his life - and they lived together in Iowa City until she passed away in 2007.

The family would like to recognize Harry’s special relationship with Nancy Buxton. Though into their eighties, the two were happy together and shared adventures including everything from bowling league to skydiving.

The family would also like to thank the Madrid Home for the Aging, where Harry spent his last years in their wonderful care.

Though saddened by his passing, the family believes that Harry’s strong faith in God will ultimately unite him with his Creator, his mother and all of his loved ones for eternity.
