Dr. William “Bill” Stanford, a distinguished Professor-Emeritus of Radiology at the University of Iowa, passed away on January 24, 2023, at the age of 92.

Bill was born on May 6, 1930 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Fred and Sarah Myrtle Stanford. He graduated from Franklin High School in Cedar Rapids and attended the University of Iowa Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine where he graduated with a BS in pharmacy in 1952 and received his MD in 1956. He met his future wife, Marlene Williams, at the University of Iowa where she was pursuing a graduate degree in physical therapy. Bill and Marlene were married October 7, 1956, and they shared 65 years together. Marlene preceded Bill in death on December 11, 2021.

Following medical school, Bill completed a rotating internship at Cincinnati General Hospital. From 1957 to 1960, he served as a Flight Surgeon at Wethersfield USAF Base in England. In 1960, he returned to the University of Iowa to begin general surgery and cardiothoracic surgical residencies. During this time, Bill and Marlene had four children, twin boys (Peter and Paul) born when they lived in England, and a daughter (Lesley) and son (Timothy) born in Iowa City while Bill took his residencies. Upon completion of his residencies in 1964, Bill was assigned to Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. During his time there, he served as a Staff Surgeon, Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Director of Cardiothoracic Resident Training and Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He also held an appointment as Clinical Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School in San Antonio. While in the Air Force Bill received the Legion of Merit medal.

Bill retired from the Air Force as a Colonel in 1980 and thereafter, he and Marlene moved to Miami, Florida where he entered a private cardiothoracic surgical practice. After two years in Miami, they returned to Iowa in 1982 where Bill took an abbreviated Residency training program in Diagnostic Radiology. Following completion of his radiology training, he remained on as faculty attaining the rank of Professor and Director of the Chest and Cardiovascular Imaging section. Bill retired in 2005 but continued to work part-time until July 2013. Bill was board certified in General Surgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Diagnostic Radiology.

Bill served five years as Secretary-Treasurer of the North American Society of Cardiac Surgery and two years as Chair of the New Imaging Modalities Subcommittee of the Council of Cardiovascular Radiology of the American Heart Association. He also served two terms as an examiner for the American Board of Radiology. He has been president of the Johnson County Medical Society and was twice recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America. He was a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, Radiological Society of North America, Roentgen Ray Society, American Heart Association, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, and numerous other prestigious scientific organizations. During his career, he published 180 peer-reviewed scientific articles, 45 book chapters and was a frequent speaker at medical meetings giving over 350 presentations in 15 countries. In 1998, he received the Golden Apple award for developing the best medical instructional electronic teaching program in the nation and in 1999 he gave the key-note address at the opening session of the Radiological Society of North America. His special area of expertise was in Electron Beam and Multi-Detector CT Evaluation of coronary artery calcification. In 2003, he was awarded a gold medal for service to radiology by the Iowa Radiological Society and in 2006, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the North American Society of Cardiac Imaging for his distinguished work in cardiovascular imaging.

Bill loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1994, Bill and Marlene purchased a condo in South Padre Island, Texas, and that was Bill’s “Happy Place.” His favorite thing every morning was watching the sun rising over the water. Bill enjoyed playing golf, classical music and opera as well as, cheering on the University of Iowa Hawkeyes. Bill was also a long-standing member of the Iowa City Noon Rotary Club. In 2017, Bill and Marlene moved to Oaknoll Retirement Residences where Bill was actively involved in the choir and served on numerous committees.

Bill is survived by son Paul Huston Stanford and his wife Janna; son Peter Ashley Stanford; daughter, Lesley Stanford Wiarda and her husband Martin; son Timothy Uptegrove Stanford and his wife Jill; grandchildren Monica Heinemann and her husband Eric, Katherine Lynch and her husband Dylan, Madeline Wiarda, Spencer Stanford, Trenton Stanford, Corley Stanford, Cole Stanford, Luke Stanford, Abby Stanford and 6 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
