Dolores Ann Burns, 80, died peacefully Friday, Jan 13, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 AM, Friday, January 20, 2023 at St. Patrick’s Church. Visitation will be from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the Church. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Pulmonary Disease Research and Development Fund at the UIHC College of Medicine c/o the UI Levitt Center for Advancement, 1 West Park Rd, Iowa City, IA 52242.

Dolores was born May 21, 1942 in Washington, IA, where she was a 1960 graduate of Washington High School. In 1963, she graduated from Mercy School of Nursing (Iowa City). While attending Nursing School she met a handsome and kind gentleman named Frank Burns Jr., who would become her husband. She was invited on a first date in a utility closet at Mercy Hospital. Dolores Zager married Frank Burns Jr. on October 19, 1963. She was a dedicated caregiver to her family, friends and patients. She was an Assistant Nurse Manager at University of Iowa Student Health Clinic where she served for over 30 years and where she concluded her 39-year nursing career.

Dolores was a member of St. Patrick’s Church. She served on Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, University Club, and Bridge Clubs. She was an avid reader who could regularly be found curled up late into the night with a good book, or a good movie.

She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family. Some of her favorite trips were winter times in Arizona, and trips to Montana, Wyoming and New Mexico. In earlier years, she and her family and friends spent many joyful summer days on their boat named “The We Four.” Most important to Dolores was her family and especially her grandchildren with whom she enjoyed many activities/trips and cherished time spent with them.

The family extends their appreciation to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, St Croix Hospice, her friend Arlene and the helpful staff at Legacy.

Dolores is survived by her husband, Frank; their children Diane (Gary) Rogers of Iowa City and Frank lll (Erin) of Solon; four grandchildren, Ryan Rogers (fiance Holly Stepanek), Collin Rogers (Sean Easler), Oliver Burns, Violet Burns; her brothers Mike (Gloria) Zager of Knoxville, and Steve (Sheila) Zager of University Heights; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved cat Isabel.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Ryan) Zager Wolf, brothers Jerry and Ron, her niece, Barbara and her nephew Daniel.
