Jack Freeman Kandel, 73, of Iowa City, Iowa, formerly of North Canton, Ohio passed away at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics on December 30, 2022.

A private family gathering will be held in Iowa City in the coming weeks. Instead of flowers, Jack’s family requests that a donation be made to a Memorial Fund which has been setup to help the family pay for medical bills and other expenses related to Jack’s illness and unexpected passing at https://gofund.me/f48348b0.

Jack was the youngest of three sons, born on May 26, 1949 in Ohio to Harold and Katheryn (Fulmer) Kandel. He grew up in Hartville, Ohio, where he graduated from Lake High School in 1967. After serving in the Army for 6 years, Jack married his best friend and the love of his life, Denise Dunlap on March 24, 1973, having two children Nicci and Eric. He spent his career at The Hoover Company where he worked for many years until retirement.

Jack, Denise, and their grandson Caleb moved to Iowa City to be near their daughter Nicci in 2020 and she is so thankful for the last few years they have been able to spend together.

Jack was a quiet man with a silly sense of humor, always having a one liner ready to make you smile. He enjoyed reading crime thrillers (often several times through), tinkering in his workshop and coming up with new and unique things to build using his favorite tools. You would also often find him spending time with Denise on her various crafting projects.

Jack is survived by his wife of almost 50-years Denise Kandel of Iowa City, Iowa; two children Nicole “Nicci” Keck (Ben Darbro) and Eric Kandel; four grandchildren Taylor Kandel, Caleb Kandel, Kendall Richards and Noah Mang; his brother Gary (Marilyn) Kandel; his nieces Shelly, Debbie and nephew Jeff as well as Jack’s two loving dogs Benji and Boo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jim (Barb) Kandel.
