Dorothy Benesh, 96, of Coralville and formerly of Cedar Rapids, passed away on December 27, 2022 at Windmill Manor.

Dorothy was born on September 4, 1926 in Vinton, Iowa to Edgar and Esther (Rinker) Reisser. After graduating Vinton High School, she attended St. Luke’s Nursing Program. She worked as a registered nurse in Cedar Rapids for many years until her retirement.

One June 6, 1948 Dorothy married Harry Benesh in Vinton on the family farm. The pair met on a blind date and throughout the years enjoyed many adventures together; especially dancing.

Dorothy was a loving wife and devoted mother who enjoyed spending time with her family and cooking up wonderful meals for all to enjoy. Her homemade chocolate chip cookies were an essential staple! She would often send them on mission trips with her children and would always send a batch back to college with the kids after holiday breaks. She was very active with Meals on Wheels and was a “billboard girl” for the organization. Dorothy had a sweet personality and could befriend anybody she came in contact with.

Dorothy is survived by her children: Michael (Lori) Benesh and Jane Gilkes; grandchildren: Nicholas (Shelly) Reed, Michael (Mandy) Gilkes and Brian Gilkes; great grandchildren: Max and Sloan Reed and Isla and Olivia Gilkes as well as her sister, Shirley Wilson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Harry; her grandson, Robert Benesh and her brother, Tom Reisser.

At this time, cremation has been accorded and a private family service will be held later in the spring. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or to Faith Academy.
